Whether the color masterbatch is good or not? Just run it on the machine and you'll know. - Our control over the quality of non-woven fabric color masterbatch

non-woven fabric color masterbatches are widely used for coloring in processes such as PP spunbonding, meltblown, and waterjetting. As a purchaser, what you care about is not only the accuracy of the color, but also the dispersion and the stability of the batches. Below, from the production perspective, we will introduce how we control these several aspects.

I. Formula Design and Carrier Matching

The performance of non-woven fabric color masterbatches primarily depends on the rational combination of pigment selection, carrier resin and dispersion system.

Carrier matching: Select carrier resins with flowability matching the non-woven fabric substrate (PP polypropylene) to ensure good compatibility with the base material. The masterbatch for melt-blown fabric requires a higher carrier melt index to match the flow requirements of the melt-blown process; the masterbatch for spunbond fabric needs to balance dispersion and processability, reducing filament breakage and filter screen clogging.

Color selection: Use heat-resistant and migration-resistant pigment varieties. Match the corresponding temperature resistance level for different spinning temperature ranges. When used for light-colored non-woven fabrics, the whiteness and covering power of the pigment need to be paid extra attention to to avoid the fabric showing through.

Dispersion additives: Add wetting agents and dispersants as needed to help the pigments distribute evenly. For the masterbatch used in meltblown fabric, the dispersion requirements are higher. It is necessary to ensure that the pigment particle size is fine enough to avoid clogging the mesh.

It should be noted that there are normal fluctuations in the raw materials from different batches. Before each batch of color masterbatch is produced, we will first make a small sample to confirm the color, and then compare it with the standard sample before proceeding with the production of the large quantity.

II. Uniformity of Distribution and Process Control

Styrene masterbatch is most prone to color spots, color fibers or batch color differences. In our production process, we pay attention to the following aspects:

Double screw mixing: Use an appropriate screw combination and processing temperature to ensure that the pigments fully depolymerize and are evenly distributed in the carrier. During the production process, samples are taken at regular intervals. After pressing into tablets or blowing films, the dispersion effect is observed to ensure there are no visible color spots with the naked eye.

Filtering system: Equipped with appropriate mesh sizes of filter screens to remove possible agglomerated particles or impurities. The masterbatch for meltblown fabric will undergo a finer filtration process to reduce the risk of clogging the filter during the spinning process.

Particle size control: For color masterbatches used in melt-blown nonwoven fabrics, we pay attention to the particle size distribution of the pigments and the masterbatches themselves. Using a laser particle size analyzer for testing, we ensure that the proportion of large particles is controlled within a reasonable range.

Batch retention and comparison: Samples and color charts are retained for each batch of products. During the production of the next batch, a comparison of color and dispersion effect will be made with the retention samples from the previous batch to ensure that the color difference between batches remains within an acceptable range.

In addition, for the color masterbatches used in hydrophilic and flame-retardant functional non-woven fabrics, we will confirm the addition ratio of the functional masterbatches to the base material before shipment to ensure their compatibility. This is to avoid poor dispersion or reduced functionality due to the interaction between the functional additives and the pigments.

Summary and Selection Suggestions

When purchasing non-woven fabric color masterbatches, it is recommended to follow the steps below for confirmation:

Specify the process type: spunbonding, meltblown, or spunlace? Different processes have different requirements for the temperature resistance grade, dispersion fineness, and filtration pressure of the masterbatch.

Provide color swatches and samples: Conduct in-machine or blow-molding tests to observe for any color spots, whether the dispersion is uniform, and whether the color is accurate. When used for melt-blown fabric, it is recommended to conduct a filtration pressure test.

Confirm batch consistency: The supplier is required to provide color swatches from multiple recent batches for comparison, to assess the stability of color and dispersion effects.
