The development of the plastic industry from January to October 2026

From January to October 2026, the Chinese plastic industry continued to experience a situation where both adjustment and transformation coexisted. The operation rhythm was influenced by multiple factors such as the macroeconomy, raw material prices, environmental protection policies, and downstream demand. The internal structure of the industry became more differentiated, with intense competition in the traditional general-purpose plastic sector, while engineering plastics, specialty engineering plastics, and degradable materials remained relatively active.

In terms of raw materials, fluctuations in international crude oil and natural gas prices continued to affect basic chemical products such as olefins and aromatics, causing fluctuations in plastic raw material costs. During some periods, there was a shortage of raw materials, increasing the procurement pressure on processing enterprises; in other periods, new production capacity was released, putting pressure on the market. The cost competition between coal-based chemical routes and petrochemical routes continued to evolve, and new capacity such as light hydrocarbon cracking had an impact on the market supply structure.

At the production and demand levels, the main downstream sectors such as packaging, building materials, automobiles, electronics and electrical appliances, and agriculture showed varying performances. Packaging remained the largest usage sector, but due to the slowdown in e-commerce growth and the promotion of recyclable packaging, the growth space narrowed; the building materials sector was hindered by the deep adjustment of the real estate industry, with weak demand for pipes and profiles; the trend of automotive lightweighting led to a steady increase in the usage of modified plastics and engineering plastics; the demand for high flame-retardant and high heat-resistant materials remained growing. Overall, the contradiction of excess general-purpose materials and reliance on imported high-end materials still remained prominent.

In terms of exports, plastic products faced pressure from tariff barriers, anti-dumping investigations, and fluctuations in shipping costs. Some orders were transferred to Southeast Asia and South Asia. At the same time, high-end engineering plastics and special additives still relied on imports. The process of domestic substitution has accelerated with the support of policies and the verification of downstream users, but the gap still exists.

Environmental protection and policies: The plastic restriction order was further implemented in many places, and the control of disposable plastic products became stricter. Degradable plastics and recycled plastics entered a policy window period. However, degradable materials faced practical bottlenecks such as high costs, inconsistent standards, and limited terminal acceptance; the exploration of physical recycling and chemical recycling technologies was carried out in parallel, and the scalable profit model was not yet clear. The requirements for carbon footprint accounting and green certification gradually penetrated the entire plastic industry chain, with leading enterprises taking the lead in planning, and the compliance pressure on small and medium-sized enterprises increased.

Industry structure: Large-scale and integrated enterprises consolidated their positions by leveraging cost and R&D advantages, while small and medium-sized enterprises lacking technical characteristics and environmental protection capabilities faced a narrowing survival space. Investment direction was more inclined towards high-end polyolefins, modified engineering plastics, recycling and regeneration, and bio-based materials, with the phenomenon of simply expanding general-purpose materials significantly reduced.

Overall, in the first ten months of 2026, the plastic industry was in a stage of "stable total volume and structural reshuffling", with the profit focus shifting towards high-tech content and green low-carbon products. Enterprise confidence was cautious, with a focus on stable operation, structural adjustment, and upgrading.
