Can polypropylene color masterbatches and polyester color masterbatches be used interchangeably? What are the differences?
The carriers are different, so they cannot be used interchangeably at will.
In principle, polypropylene color masterbatches and polyester color masterbatches cannot be used interchangeably. The main reason is that the carrier resin systems are different. The carriers of color masterbatches need to be compatible with the substrate being colored. polypropylene color masterbatches use carriers that are adapted to the polypropylene system, while polyester color masterbatches use carriers that are adapted to polyester resin.
If they are mixed across materials, the compatibility between the carrier and the substrate is poor. During the production process, poor dispersion may occur, resulting in color spots, stripes on the surface of the finished product, and it will also affect the mechanical properties of the filament and the product, increasing the occurrence of broken filaments and defects. There are also differences in the processing temperature range between the two. Mixing them makes it difficult to match the corresponding spinning or injection molding processes, and the coloring effect is unstable.
The formulation system and usage focus are different.
Apart from the carrier, the internal additive systems of the two types of color masterbatches are specially formulated. The processing temperature of polypropylene is relatively mild, and the formulation additives focus on adapting to the processing environment of polypropylene, taking into account dispersion, migration resistance, etc. They are mostly used in spinning, non-woven fabrics, webbing, etc.
The processing temperature of polyester is higher. The pigments and additives in polyester color masterbatches need to have good heat resistance. They are not prone to color change or decomposition in high-temperature processing environments and are often used in polyester filaments, short fibers, chemical fiber fabrics, etc. At the same time, the adaptation standards for color migration, sun resistance, and color fastness of the two also differ according to the requirements of downstream products.
In simple terms, the first priority when choosing color masterbatches is to match the substrate type. Polypropylene products should prefer polypropylene carrier color masterbatches, and polyester products should use polyester carrier color masterbatches. If special conditions require trial fitting, it is necessary to do small sample tests in advance to observe compatibility, coloring uniformity, and the appearance of the finished product. Reasonable selection can ensure smooth production and stable color quality of the finished product.
